Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit: 60 Year of Memories

This very nicely presented coffee-table book recounts the history of South Africa’s most famous racetrack. The 504 pages, which are lavishly illustrated with over 1500 images, many never previously published, are split into five major sections.

The first section of the book covers the early years of the circuits origin and history, the characters involved and how the circuit grew in stature gaining international recognition. The evolution of the layouts are dealt with as well as the recent comprehensive redevelopment of the venue.

The second section of the book covers 61 years of motorsport, both local and international, at Kyalami. The story begins in November 1961 and ends with the Kyalami 9 Hour held in February 2022. Each year of motorsport is summarised with the addition of period images and results of the international races and listings of the various South African circuit racing champions. This section of the book covers 120 pages.

The third section of the book details all the races held at Kyalami from 1961 until 2021. Many of the of programme covers for these races are depicted in these 20 pages. Each page covers 3 years of race dates with the selected programme covers.

The fourth section of the book is dedicated to 60 Years of incredible images from numerous well-known local motorsport photographers including Gavin Stapleton (David Stapleton Collection), Malcolm Sampson, David Pearson (Motoprint.co.za), Roger Swan, Colin Watling, Woody Rodseth, Keith Doig, Johan Pretorius, Paul Blackburn, Eric Buijs and Tony Alves. The images cover various themes and the various formula and categories that have competed at the circuit. The photos contain detailed captions that cover images taken on the track, in the pits and of the competing drivers, riders and teams.

The fifth section contains over 225 special memories received from race drivers, riders, officials, motoring media, photographers, sponsors, marshals, race fans and others that have played a role in the 60 Years of history at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit. Contributors include those of World Champions and Grand Prix Winners such as Jody Scheckter, Sir Jackie Stewart and Alain Prost.
